One Down, Two to Go

I am writing this post from Athens airport. I have an 8 hour layover before I can catch my little flight to Kefalonia, so I think it’s time I catch up on my blog, which I have neglected for a while.

I cannot believe the first trimester of college is finished already. And I survived,ha. Maybe it’s the fact that this diploma is usually completed over two years, and we are squashing it into one, but it’s definitely keeping me on my toes.

So, upon reflection of the past three months, I can honestly say I have learnt a huge amount. Just yesterday I was measuring dad’s dining room table to sell on eBay. I had my brother jotting down the measurements, and I was right in there with the tape measure. Jack said ‘jeez, you should be on The Block or something’. It was basic, I was measuring the height, width and depth of a table, not the Sagrada Familia, but I did it with a confidence developed just recently.

I have learnt that just studying this course in isolation is probably not going to cut it. You have to immerse yourself in the world of design, and my god, that’s easy to do. There is a blog dedicated to everything imaginable. There are so many design collaborations developing every day, which is really exciting as it means that I could work across disciplines in my career, there really are no limits.

I have also met some cool people in my classmates, which is a pleasant surprise as it was so impersonal at uni when I did my first degree. Here, we all help each other out and keep each other afloat when the work load gets overwhelming. Free champagnes next door on a Friday after school is a motivator – Leah and Giustina, I’ll leave that one to you.

I am about to embark on a two month Greek adventure. I have some work experience lined up with different designers, and related business owners in Kefalonia, so I guess I better learn some Greek. I can’t wait to see my mum and step dad’s newly built villa, and I cannot wait to soak up that sun. And see them. Of course.

For the next couple of months I’ll be blogging from Kefalonia. Just put your sunnies on, and imagine you’re here too.
